Asthma, lung function & lung flows test

While people of all ages can have it, asthma is a common condition amongst children since they have sensitive airways that are triggered by various aero-irritants. Asthma is the swelling, inflammation and tightening of the airways to the lungs, due to a particular trigger such as a virus, exercise, allergies to aero-allergens such as dust mites and smoke. These triggers cause swelling, inflammation and tightening of the airways, making airflow in and out of the lungs difficult.

What are the signs to look out for?

Coughing, wheezing, chest tightness and difficulty breathing are all common symptoms to look out for. While these symptoms may be mistaken for a cold or flu, if these signs appear after exposure to certain animals, dust, pollens or even during exercise, it is most likely asthma.

Asthma is not always a nuisance, for some children, asthma attacks can interfere with daily life and severely affect his or her ability to breathe. As your paediatrician, Dr Böcking will be able to diagnose asthma and help find the triggers of your child's asthma and how best to manage it.

Parents that suspect that their child may have asthma should see their paediatrician for diagnosis and treatment. Your paediatrician can also then rule out any other serious condition affecting the lungs or airways.

For an accurate diagnosis to be made, Dr Böcking may suggest a lung function, lung flows test and an allergy test (skin prick test). A lung functions test will measure the amount of air your child can inhale and exhale, as well as screen for any other lung diseases. Thereafter, the lung flows test will give an indication of your child's lung volume and diffusing capacity. If asthma is the problem, your paediatrician may help you figure out what aero-allergens and triggers may be avoided to prevent asthma attacks using an allergy test.
