Bladder infections

Children often get urinary tract infections, but the symptoms in children especially for infants and preschoolers can look very different from that of an adult's. Since children often struggle to fight off infections, minor bladder infections can become serious, causing kidney damage if left untreated.

What are the signs to look out for?

For younger children under the age of 2, you may notice:

  • A fever
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Irritability
  • Poor feeding or appetite

For older children over the age of 2, symptoms may include:

  • Pain when urinating
  • Pain in the pelvic area
  • Cloudy, dark or smelly urine
  • Frequent urge to urinate
  • Fever

A urinary tract infection can easily be treated once diagnosed. Dr Böcking may do a simple urine test to see if an infection is present and treat a urinary tract or bladder infection with antibiotics. He may also assist you in preventing future bladder infections, helping teach your little one good hygiene when going to the loo, especially for girls.

Any other potty training related concerns and strange symptoms related to the bladder or urinary tracts such as changes in bathroom habits or sudden bedwetting should be brought up during your visits with Dr Böcking as it may be an indication of something more serious. If issues of the kidneys are suspected, it is essential to have Dr Böcking take a closer look.
